That\u2019s exactly what happened to one hosting provider\u2019s server, only it wasn\u2019t a movie night. It was the largest cyberattack ever recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid-May 2025, Cloudflare stopped a 7.3 terabits-per-second (Tbps) <a href=\"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/largest-ddos-attacks-reported-till-today\/\">DDoS attack<\/a> dead in its tracks. To put that in perspective, 37.4 terabytes of junk traffic were hurled at a single IP address in just 45 seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ddos-isn-t-new-but-this-was-a-digital-tsunami\">DDoS Isn\u2019t New. But This Was a Digital Tsunami<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s be clear: DDoS attacks aren\u2019t new. But this one raised the bar and then broke it. <strong>Earlier this year:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>6.5 Tbps attack<\/strong> was reported in April 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>5.6 Tbps assault<\/strong> was mitigated in January 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft endured a <strong>3.47 Tbps barrage back<\/strong> in 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But 7.3 Tbps? That\u2019s next level. It\u2019s 12% bigger than any attack Cloudflare had ever recorded. It was a symphony of chaos. The attack was a multi-vector DDoS attack. <strong>Here\u2019s what the attackers used:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-udp-flood-99-996-of-traffic\">UDP Flood (99.996% of Traffic)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UDP is fast, connectionless, and doesn\u2019t care if the recipient is ready. That\u2019s what makes it perfect for DDoS. UDP doesn\u2019t ask for permission. It just sends data, and that\u2019s exactly why attackers love it. The attacker carpet-bombed <strong>21,925 ports per second<\/strong>, <strong>peaking at 34,517 ports\/sec.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reflection-amp-amplification-attacks\">Reflection &amp; Amplification Attacks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remaining 0.004% of the attack traffic, amounting to <strong>1.3 GB, consisted of several reflection and amplification attacks<\/strong>, including QOTD reflection, Echo reflection, NTP reflection, Mirai UDP floods, Portmap floods, and RIPv1 amplification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of these amplified traffic against the victim, making it appear as if legitimate servers were attacking them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Also Read:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/palo-alto-releases-patch-for-pan-os-dos-flaw-cve-2024-3393\/\">Palo Alto Urges PAN-OS Users to Update for DoS Flaw Mitigation<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-was-the-source-of-the-attack\">What was the Source of the Attack?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a worldwide action, with more than <strong>122,145<\/strong> <strong>distinct source IP addresses<\/strong> across <strong>5,433 autonomous systems (AS)<\/strong> and based in <strong>161 countries worldwide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Top contributors:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brazil 10.5 %<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vietnam &#8211; 9.8 %<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other top 10: China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Top Offending Networks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Telefonica Brazil (AS27699)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viettel Group (AS7552)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>China Unicom &amp; Chunghwa Telecom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the peak of the attack, an unbelievable number of <strong>45,097 IP addresses were attacking<\/strong> the server per second to highlight the intense quantity and ferocity of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-did-cloudflare-stop-it\">How Did Cloudflare Stop It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now here\u2019s where things get smart, really smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anycast-routing\">Anycast Routing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack was spread across 477 data centres in 293 cities. Anycast made sure traffic hit the nearest Cloudflare node, which reduced pressure and enabled global mitigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-autonomous-detection\">Autonomous Detection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cloudflare\u2019s DoSd engine (denial of service daemon) analysed live traffic in real time using eBPF and XDP Linux kernel-level packet filtering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It fingerprinted malicious traffic. Then created custom filters. And dropped the attack packets without human intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gossiping-servers\">\u201cGossiping\u201d Servers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each server in Cloudflare\u2019s network shared live attack data with others, amplifying the defense just like the attackers amplified traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-isn-t-just-a-record-it-s-a-warning\">This Isn\u2019t Just a Record. It\u2019s a Warning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Botnets like RapperBot are still active and getting more aggressive, and observed that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>50,000+ bots daily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100+ daily attack targets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attacks on industries like finance, public infrastructure, IoT, and social platforms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worse, DDoS extortion is growing. Hackers now demand \u201cprotection fees\u201d to avoid future attacks. Sound familiar? It\u2019s digital mafia tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-you-do-now\">What can you do Now?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what can organisations do about it? Start by understanding your exposure. If you\u2019re a hosting provider or ISP, Cloudflare offers a free DDoS Botnet Threat Feed. Disable anything that doesn\u2019t serve a business purpose. That includes legacy services like QOTD, Echo, or RIPv1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These old protocols are easy targets. Attackers use them for reflection and amplification. If you\u2019re not using them, kill them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, don\u2019t forget your IoT devices. Change default passwords. Keep firmware updated. Segment your network so that a compromised webcam doesn\u2019t become the doorway for a larger attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you rely on UDP-based services like VoIP or gaming, don\u2019t just block all UDP traffic. Apply intelligent rate-limiting that protects you without disrupting your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is balance. Security without disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn\u2019t just another DDoS attack. It was the largest in history, a 7.3 Tbps flood, delivering 37.4 terabytes in just 45 seconds. The message is clear: cyber threats are getting faster, bigger, and smarter.
