{"id":4956,"date":"2026-10-12T10:38:03","date_gmt":"2026-10-12T10:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/?p=4956"},"modified":"2026-10-12T10:48:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T10:48:30","slug":"idc-frontier-ransomware-attack-495-japanese-organizations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/idc-frontier-ransomware-attack-495-japanese-organizations\/","title":{"rendered":"IDC Frontier Ransomware Attack Hits 495 Japanese Organizations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Customers in part of the provider\u2019s East Japan region have been told their data may be lost for good, and that their own backups may be the only way to recover.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ransomware attack on IDC Frontier, one of Japan\u2019s largest domestic cloud providers, has spread across the country\u2019s digital and physical supply chains. It has disrupted services at railway operators, a prefectural police force, a frozen-food logistics firm and dozens of consumer platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IDC Frontier is owned by SoftBank, the Japanese conglomerate and major OpenAI investor. Its IDCF Cloud platform is positioned as a homegrown alternative to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, and it appeals to companies and public bodies that want their data hosted on Japanese soil. That concentration of customers turned a single breach into a nationwide problem. In a statement released Wednesday, the company said 495 companies and local government services had been affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Four C Zones severely Damaged<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idcf.jp\/news\/topics\/20261008001\" rel=\"nofollow\"><u>According to IDC Frontier<\/u><\/a>, the intrusion happened in the early hours of Wednesday and knocked part of its server infrastructure offline. In a follow-up notice on Thursday, the provider said four cloud zones had been damaged so badly that affected customers would need to rebuild their systems on other infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>It is expected that it will be difficult to retrieve or restore customer data stored in a part of East Japan Region 1<\/strong>,\u201d the company said. It added that its current view is that recovery \u201cwill only be possible from backup data held by the customer themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has not disclosed how the attackers gained access or who is behind the attack. It has also not said whether a ransom was demanded, or whether data was stolen as well as encrypted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Attackers claim 3.6 petabytes encrypted in Seven Minutes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screenshots that purport to come from the attackers have circulated on social media under the message \u201cYour Cloud is Ours.\u201d The attackers claim they:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"679\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IDC-Frontier-Ransomware-Attack.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4963\" srcset=\"https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IDC-Frontier-Ransomware-Attack.webp 679w, https:\/\/certera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IDC-Frontier-Ransomware-Attack-300x165.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gained access to 239 systems<\/strong>&nbsp;running virtual machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Locked 225 large storage systems<\/strong>&nbsp;holding 3.6 petabytes of data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encrypted more than <strong>16,600 virtual machine disks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deleted 554,153 backup<\/strong> snapshots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say the whole operation took seven minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these claims have been independently verified. <strong>Cybernews researchers found<\/strong> that the cloud console shown in the screenshots was inaccessible. The ransom note also does not name any known ransomware group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Millions of Rail Customers potentially Exposed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">East Japan Railway Company (JR East), the country\u2019s largest rail operator, and its credit card subsidiary View Card were among the first organizations to confirm they were affected. The companies said up to 6.09 million records may have been accessed through email delivery services hosted on IDCF Cloud. Separately, JR Kyushu reported that around 1.3 million email records were affected. Both operators said credit card numbers, home addresses and phone numbers were not exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food Logistics Disrupted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact has reached beyond data. Nissui Logistics, a frozen-food warehousing firm and IDCF customer, reported a systems failure that stopped it from receiving and shipping goods. The company runs 17 cold storage and distribution centers with roughly 400,000 tonnes of capacity. These centers serve manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and restaurants, so any extended outage could ripple through Japan\u2019s food distribution network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Widening List of Victims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Japan Cyber Watch <a href=\"https:\/\/japancyberwatch.com\/articles\/idcf-cloud-unauthorized-access-outage-2026\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/japancyberwatch.com\/articles\/idcf-cloud-unauthorized-access-outage-2026\" rel=\"nofollow\">reports<\/a>, other organizations believed to be affected include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ibaraki Prefectural Police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the news agency Jiji Press<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the fan messaging app for the all-female idol group SKE48<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the travel booking site Skyticket<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the karaoke operator Daiichikosho<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the e-commerce platform FutureShop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a small fraction of the 495 affected organizations has commented publicly so far. More breach disclosures are expected as customers assess their exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Government Warning: \u201cNo longer just a problem for the IT department\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, Japan\u2019s National Cybersecurity Office sent a letter to government ministries, to be passed on to local public bodies and private companies. The office was established last year after a string of high-profile incidents, including the ransomware attack on brewer Asahi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is no longer just a problem for the IT department,\u201d the letter warned. It urged organizations to:<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>keep their security protections up to date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use strong passwords<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tighten defenses across their supply chains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter also noted that artificial intelligence is making vulnerabilities \u201cincreasingly complex.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident is likely to sharpen debate in Japan over the risks of relying on a small number of domestic cloud providers. In the push for data sovereignty, one compromised platform can now disrupt transport, policing and the food supply simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lessons for Every Business Running Online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IDC Frontier attack shows how quickly a single breach can spread through a shared digital supply chain. In a matter of hours, one compromised cloud provider disrupted railway operators, a police force, a news agency, food logistics and dozens of consumer platforms. Many of the affected organizations did nothing wrong themselves. Their exposure came from relying on a third party. For some, the loss of data that cannot be recovered without their own backups may prove more costly than the outage itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations of every size need to take ownership of their own security posture.
